A Salute to Ledbury

by the late Venerable Jessie H. Proctor, Dilkusha, 22 Bank Crescent, Ledbury

Jessie gave me this poem many years ago when I was Mayor of Ledbury - I said that I would do something with it, I'm sorry that it has taken so long

A Salute to Ledbury

(written for the Civic Service at St Michaels 12 Sept 1982)

Salute to lovely Ledbury, this ancient market town;

Its streets are crammed with history, its annals with renown

Salute to lovely Ledbury, with WELCOME on its door

To all our visitors each year, increasing more and more

Salute to lovely Ledbury, where people take their time,

Enabling us to stop and think, and to reach heights sublime.

Salute to lovely Ledbury, where old and new are found,

Where people can live happily, and kindliness abound.

Salute to lovely Ledbury, which has its problems too,

Yet does not sit down under them, but works to make them few.

Salute to lovely Ledbury, for some their place of birth,

And others well-adopted here, Praise God for this fair earth!
