Apple Tree Scheme

A project to establish three small Apple orchards at School locations in Strömstad

The countryside around Ledbury is home to some of the finest apple orchards in England. Awareness of this agricultural and historic heritage has been enlivened by “The Big Apple”, our local parishes celebrating the new interest in old varieties of Apples.

The aim of the Apple Tree Scheme is to plant three small orchards in the grounds of each of the schools in and around Strömstad. It will remind Strömstad schoolchildren of Ledbury, and provide a unique living platform for visits and communication of all types.

Who do we think could get involved;

A number of local growers have been approached for their thoughts, and they have all been positive.

The local Young Farmers, local and national NFU, apple processing and marketing companies, Cider manufacturers, Horticulturalists, Local Schools , National Bodies, Organic Food Producers and possibly you.

What are the aims.

Ø       To establish 3 viable apple orchards in the town of Strömstad, Sweden

Ø       To put in place a programme for the maintenance of the orchards with appropriate working visits, and specialist instruction and demonstrations.

Ø       To promote Herefordshire and UK Agriculture

Ø       To promote the link between the twin towns of Strömstad and Ledbury

What are the objectives

Ø       To grow an apple crop

This will involve a great deal of work, organisation and planning. It is already attracting interest and offers of assistance from various people and organisations.

It is hoped that the inaugural meeting of the Apple Tree Scheme will be in November 2000.

If you are interested, without obligation, to come to a meeting, please contact Spencer Lane 01531 633865 to be put on the invitation list.
